THE CHALLENGE
Smithfield Market is a genuinely mixed-use building — a public pay car park, apartments, a hotel and commercial units all sharing three underground levels with no mobile signal. Charging had to serve every one of those users, switch roles between day and night, and work where phones don't.
THE SOLUTION
- A 140kVA dedicated EV supply — with sub-distribution boards on Levels -2 and -3 feeding all three floors.
- Public by day, residents by night — Level -1 serves the public pay garage by day and switches to residents at night.
- Every user type covered — residents, hotel guests and commercial units charged and billed on one managed network.
- Connectivity underground — cell boosters and Wi-Fi antennas installed so the app works three floors down.
THE RESULTS
- 17 chargers live across three underground levels.
- One network, four user groups — public, residents, hotel and commercial.
- Day-to-night role switching makes the same chargers work twice as hard.
- Full app coverage where there was no mobile signal at all.

WHY THE APPROACH WORKS
Most operators would look at a mixed-use basement with no phone signal and four different user groups and walk away. GEV built one network that flexes between public and resident use by time of day, bills every user type correctly, and works three floors underground — proof that even the most complex sites can be made to charge.
